Top four data management trends for 2023

An effective data management solution can be critical to gaining a competitive advantage by harnessing the power of your customer information. In effect, it’s corporate gold.

In this article, we investigate the top four data management trends for 2023.

If your organisation has challenges with the management of data, it’s not unreasonable to experience frustration and feel hamstrung by issues such as underutilisation or lack of access.

Data management is complex and evolving and becoming more central to successful and efficient operations. The team at Zipform Digital handles millions of data records every month for our clients, data is something that we live and breathe. We continuously work with our clients to improve the way that data is collected and managed, and our developers work to gain insights about customers, business processes and operations.

As we get closer to 2023, we’ve identified four data management trends you should keep an eye on.

1. Self-service analytics tools

Not a new concept, self-service analytics tools would be familiar to most people. The increased range and functionality of these tools is a something to watch out for in 2023.

For those not in the know, they are a form of business intelligence (BI) which enables non-data focused people within organisations to perform queries and generate reports with limited IT or data scientist support. To date, they have been characterised by simple BI tools that conduct basic analytics with an underlying data model and simplified data access.

What to watch out for? Increasingly low barriers to entry, global shortage of skilled tech workers and other factors mean that the data analytics output of those businesses with self service capabilities now surpasses that of data scientists. The number of providers to allow businesses to manage their data analytics has increased exponentially in the past five years and is a growing market.

Following two years of significant change from the global pandemic, 2023 will see data governance and data security will become even more paramount, with employees continuing to work remotely using their own devices.

2. Artificial intelligence

With AI being embedded into data management tools, it can simplify, optimise and automate key data processes. Already in place in many organisations and networks, the three most exciting AI data management trends to watch out for include:

  • AI driven data cleansing

  • Intelligent enterprise data catalogues: populating and updating data sets without people

  • Data fabric: completely underutilised to date, it provides infrastructure to allow consistent, controlled and secure access to data in a hybrid cloud environment.

3. Augmented Data Management

This is the application of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning) to automate data management tasks that have traditionally been undertaken manually. These may have been tasks such as:

  • Resolving data quality issues (and suggesting rules)

  • Metadata management: labelling, classifying and searching data

  • Single view of data: or a master data model which collects data from different departments within a business to create a master record.

By turning these manual tasks into an automated service, data teams can focus on other priorities. Gartner has predicted that augmented Data Management can reduce manual tasks by 45%.

Neil Hunt, Digital Solutions Manager at Zipform Digital, said, “customer data is corporate gold mine. Augmented Data Management can not only free up data scientists to concentrate on business-critical issues, but also provide critical insights to enhance corporate performance.”

4. DataOps

Data Operations (better known as DataOps) is a data management framework that borrows from the principles of agile methodology, lean manufacturing and DevOps to create a collaborative data management practice.

Its main purpose is to improve communication, integration and automation of data flow. Additionally, improvements in team collaboration within a business are usually a by-product of the framework.

DataOps as a concept isn’t new. Originally recognised as an innovation trigger for data management way back in 2018 by Gartner, the “DataOps Movement” is a probably way of bringing order to data chaos, and data will always be chaos at its root.

It’s something that can help businesses deploy and make decisions at a rapid pace without compromising the quality or integrity of the data being used.
